Money and tipping

• Currency is the Tanzanian shilling; USD is widely accepted for tourism services
• Bring USD notes issued after 2009 — older notes are refused
• Guideline tips: USD 20–25 per vehicle per day for your guide, USD 10 per day for camp staff
• ATMs are available in Arusha, Moshi, Stone Town and at the airports

Connectivity and power

Buy a local Vodacom or Airtel SIM at the airport for reliable data. Most camps have Wi-Fi in the main area but it can be slow. Power is 230V with UK three-pin sockets, so bring a Type G adapter and a power bank for game drives.

Safety and comfort

• Tanzania is welcoming and safe for travellers; use normal city precautions in Arusha and Stone Town
• Drink bottled or filtered water only — we refill your bottle daily
• Soft duffel bags only for light aircraft, usually 15 kg per person
• Dress modestly in villages and Stone Town, and cover shoulders and knees
