Best Time to Visit Tanzania

There is no bad time for a Tanzania safari — but the best month depends on whether you want river crossings, calving, green-season value or clear Kilimanjaro summits.

Browse Safaris

Best overall wildlife viewing

June to October. Vegetation thins, animals concentrate at water and the Mara River crossings usually run from late July into September. This is peak season, so book eight to twelve months ahead.

Best for the calving season

Late January to early March in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, when roughly half a million wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks and predator action is at its most intense.

Best value and quiet parks

March to May. Rates drop sharply, the landscapes are green and photogenic and you often have sightings to yourself. Expect afternoon rain and a few road closures.

Best for Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar

  • Kilimanjaro: January to mid-March and June to October for the clearest summits
  • Zanzibar: June to October and December to February for dry, sunny beach days
  • Avoid April for both — it is the wettest month of the year
