The logistics of pairing a northern circuit safari with the Indian Ocean.
Safari first, beach second. After four or five early starts and long game drives, Zanzibar is the reward, not the warm-up, and doing it in that order almost always makes for a better trip.
A week on safari and four to five nights on the coast is the most common split. Anything under three beach nights disappears into travel days. If you only have ten days in total, six on safari and three on the beach still works well.
Daily flights run from the Serengeti airstrips and Arusha to Zanzibar, usually with a short stop en route. It is a light-aircraft hop, so keep to the 15kg soft-bag allowance and put anything fragile in your hand luggage.
- North (Nungwi, Kendwa): swimmable at all tides, liveliest, best sunsets
- East (Paje, Jambiani): wide tidal flats, kitesurfing, quieter and better value
- South-east (Michamvi): calm and low-key, good for honeymooners
- Stone Town: one or two nights of history before the beach
June to October and late December to February are the driest and best for both halves of the trip. April and May bring the long rains to the coast, when many beach hotels close or discount heavily.
Book the beach hotel around the flight schedule, not the other way around, and allow a full day at the end before an international departure. We handle all the internal flights and transfers as one booking, so a delay on the safari side never leaves you stranded.
